Notes: The top four finishers in each event qualified for the following week's state championships.

No wind info was available.

This was the second year that the 4x800 was a standard event.

The Girls Pole Vault was not added as an event until 1999.

Girls High Jump places look a bit fishy. Not sure if proper tiebreak rules were implemented.

Relays, Distance Events Are Keys To Spartans' Regional Track Title

By Jabin White, Journal Reporter

Charlotte - Mount Tabor's distance runners and relay teams proved once again to be too strong for the competition as the Spartans stormed to the boys' team title of the Class 4-A Western Regional track meet at Myers Park High School in Charlotte yesterday.

Greensboro Dudley's girls, led by Marlene Poole, took the girls' team championship.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for next Saturday's Class 4-A state championship meet at N.C. State in Raleigh.

The Spartan boys took individual titles in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, as well as the 3,200-meter relay title. Mount Tabor also placed third in the 800-meter relay and fifth in the 1,600-meter relay.

Those finishes helped the Spartans collect 84 points to outdistance Charlotte Garinger in what became a two-team race. Garinger finished with 72 points.

Coach Mike Esposito of Mount Tabor said that he was not surprised at the Spartans' performances on the track.

It went about as well as we could have expected," Esposito said. "I think we had bests in three of the relays, and the 4-by-800 relay has to be among the top fifteen in the country."

The Spartans' 3,200-meter relay team of Kyle and Brant Armentrout, Bill McElroy and James Brown set a meet record with a time of 7:54.71, breaking the mark of 7:58.83 set by Watauga in last year's event.

What Esposito was not expecting, however, was the success of Greg McClellan in the field events.

McClellan registered a throw of 51 feet 7.5 inches in the shot put for second place, and threw the discus 154 feet and 10 inches for third place. Esposito expected McClellan to provide some points, but the 14 points he netted (points were awarded for the first six places in a 10-8-6-4-2-1 format) in his two events were a bonus.

"The biggest surprise was definitely McClellan," Esposito said. "We didn't count on him to provide that many points, so we're real pleased with his performance."

The Spartans' enthusiasm about the team title was tempered a bit when Kyle Armentrout was disqualified from the 3,200-meter run after it was ruled that he took steps in the infield.

Esposito appealed the ruling after the meet's conclusion to no avail, and he said that Armentrout's absence in the event at the state meet could cost Mount Tabor.

The disqualification nullified one of the most exciting finishes of the meet. With one lap to go in the 3200-meter run, it was a three-man race between the Armentrouts and Patrick Phillips of Watauga.

With half a lap to go, Brant kicked into high gear and breezed to a first-place finish in 9:41.2. Phillips had a two-step lead on Kyle going around the final turn, but Kyle sprinted down the stretch to catch Phillips with about 10 yards to go. Kyle passed him briefly, but Phillips caught his second wind and edged Kyle at the finish line.

Dudley's Poole dominated the girls' sprint events, winning the 100- and 200-meter dash events and anchoring two relay victories.

In other notable performances from area athletes, William Barringer of East Forsyth won the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 4 inches. Parkland's James Demetrakis also qualified for the state meet with a fourth-place finish.

Ronald Burns of West Forsyth joined Mount Tabor's McClellan in qualifying for the discus, as Burns took third place with a throw of 154 feet, 10 inches.

Debbie Evans of Davie County, who just missed qualifying for the state meet in the shot put, qualified in the discus with a third- place throw of 109 feet, 10 inches.

Marcus Sutton of North Forsyth qualified in the long jump with a second-place jump of 22-6.25, and he successfully defended last year's regional title in the triple jump with a 48-8.5.
