Polk County High's Karen Godlock, a two-time N.C. 1A-2A state champion, stole the show Saturday at the 16th Wendy's Cross Country Invitational Saturday, winning the 3A girls division with a meet-record time of 17 minutes 36.1 seconds.

That shattered the previous mark of 18:04 over the 3.1-mile Charlotte McAlpine course.

Godlock, who won the Sun Valley Invitational on the same course a week ago, was relatively happy with her race.

" I ran this course last week and I really like it," said Godlock, who will compete on the course again Nov. 28, in the Kinney regional competition with hopes of qualifying for the nationals. Godlock was fourth in last year's regional.

Providence High's Ami Herrman, last year's N.C. 4A state champion, won the girls open division with a time of 18:57.5.

Sun Valley's Bryan Zmijewski ran a 15:24.9 to win the boys invitational division, missing a meet record by just 1.9 seconds.

T.L. Hanna's Joe Harris, the defending S.C. 3A state champ, won the boys open division in 16:00.2. Rock Hill's Paul Koterba finished second in 16:36.5.

Swain's Tommy Trehern won the boys 3A division in 15:37.3. Tara Merritt, of Atlanta Brookwood, won the girls invitational division in 19:08.9.
