Source: The Charlotte Observer, Sunday - Oct. 8, 1995 Watauga runs to girls title; E. Meck's Walts boys champ By Brett Honeycutt, Special Correspondent Watauga High won the girls Invitational and East Mecklenburg junior Shane Walts took the boys Open title Saturday morning at the Wendy's Cross Country Invitational meet at McAlpine Park. The meet, which featured high school teams from seven states, broke last year's record by 250 with 1,987 runners. Led by Addie Bower's seventh-place finish in 19 minutes 38 seconds, defending N.C. 4A champion Watauga won the Invitational, the day's top race, compiling 106 points to finish ahead of runner-up Spartanburg (112). Dobyns Bennett (Tenn.) was third with 114. Dobyns Bennett's Carla McCready was the individual winner of the Invitational for the second straight year as five of the top 10 runners from last year finished in the top 10. Independence freshman Jacquelyn Tinkham (20:17) finished fifth in the girls Open division in 20 minutes 17 seconds. Walts, who is running almost a minute faster than last year, outdistanced Mike Mauriello of South Mecklenburg 16:36 - 16:48. Mauriello caught up with Walts at about 1 1/2 miles and ran with him around the lake. "I usually come into the race saying, 'You have to attack the hill and stay strong,'" Walts said. This was Walts' second win in a major race, but only Tinkham's fourth cross country race. "I just never expected to do so well," she said. "I've already knocked three minutes off my first race (from this year)." In the boys Invitational division, Middle Country High School of Long Island, N.Y. took the top spot from defending champion Dobyns Bennett (TN) 76 - 138. James Hunt of Edgewater, Fla. won the race in 15:58 as Mount Tabor's Chris Vaughn (16:10) was sixth to finish as the top N.C. runner. Providence's Brett Adkins (16:43) of Providence was the top Charlotte runner in the boys invitational, placing 22nd.
