More that 1,700 runners from six states completed in the high school meet's eight races. In the invitational division, considered the meet's top race, East Mecklenburg's boys finished ninth from a field of 25 schools. Pen Peery and Greg Prudhomme ran for the Eagles, whose chance of winning were damaged when two teammates were injured in the race. Providence's Justin Niedzialek, runnking on a sore ankle he twisted Friday in practice, kept pace in the boys open with eventual winner Pablo Vega (15:52) of Tennessee High in Bristol until the final quarter-mile, when Vega pulled away for a 12-second victory. "I'm not upset with my time (16 minutes four seconds), considering what happened (on Friday)," Niedzialek said. "But I was just looking forward to this meet." Myers Park's Courtney Horn (20:34) finished second behind Enka's Susan Poole (20:22) in the girls open race. Watauga's Will Hodges (15:39) won the boys invitational. |
