March 6-7, 1999
NCAA Indoor Championships - Indianapolis

Appalachian State's Mary Jayne Harrelson finished second in the Mile at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in Indianapolis. She ran a PR of 4:39.52, just behind natilonal champion Kate Vermeluen of West Virginia (4:39.08). Harrelson ran 4:45.19 in the prelims on Friday to qualify for the final. She is a graduate of Roxboro Person High School.

Other former high school athletes from NC with noteworthy performances at the NCAA Indoor were DeAnne Davis (UNC) - 6th in the TJ (43-3), and Sarah-Vance Goodman (Villanova) - 7th in the 5000 (16:12.94).


February 26, 1999
USATF Indoor Nationals - Atlanta

Appalachian State's women's Distance Medley Relay team ran 11:37.28 to finish fifth at the USATF Indoor Nationals at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Friday Feb. 26. The team included three North Carolina high school graduates. Mary Jayne Harrelson of Roxboro Person, Abby Reeder of Charlotte Christian, and Abby Slack of Jamestown Ragsdale. The time met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying standard.


February 13, 1999
at Virginia Tech

Appalachian State's Mary Jayne Harrelson ran 4:41.20 at Virginia Tech on Feb. 13, finishing second behind Olympian Sheri Goddard-Kenah(4:41.07) and ahead of Olympian Julie Henner (4:44.0). The mark was a personal best, an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships, and ranks her #1 in the nation as of 2/16. Before college Harrelson ran track for Roxboro Person HS.

November 23, 1998
NCAA Cross-Country Championships
Sarah-Vance Goodman
ran on a state championship team (T.C. Roberson) in 1997. One year later she is on an NCAA Championship team. Goodman placed 12th in today's NCAA Cross-Country Meet in Lawrence, Kansas, helping Villanova to the team title. Villanova scored 106 points to defeat last year's champion BYU, who totaled 110. Stanford was a close third with 111. Goodman earned All-American honors and was the first freshman across the line. She ran 17:18 for the 5K course, just behind Villanova's number one runner, Carrie Tollefson who was 11th (17:16).

Other former North Carolina High School runners who ran today included:
64th Mary Jayne Harrelson (ASU, Jr) 17:58; 78th Julie Smith (North Carolina, Jr) 18:04.85 (former West Forsyth runner); 130th Erin Musson (NC State, So) 18:31.25; 199th Meredith Faircloth (NC State, Sr) 19:10.44; and 209th Rebecca Walker (North Carolina, Fr)19:15.21 (former Myers Park runner).

In the men's race (10K):
65th Jon Weldon (Stanford, Sr) 31:43.20; 112th Chris Pluchos (NC State, Sr) 32:15.90; 116th David Patterson (NC State, Fr) 32:18.50; 147th Robbie Howell (NC State, Sr) 32:41.80; 235th Justin Niedzialek (Princeton, Sr) 34:34.80. NC State's men were 8th (of 31 teams) with 311 points.

November 20, 1998
1997 FootLocker National finalist Josh Baker of Morganton Freedom HS has signed with UNC-Charlotte. Baker was 2nd in the 1997 State 4-A Cross-Country Meet (15:33) and 2nd in the 1997 South Regional FootLocker Regional (15:20). He has also run 4:24.0 for the 1600m and 9:36.25 for 3200m.

Former Thomasville Star Jon Weldon placed tenth (31:03) at Fresno State. Weldon, a senior was the 4th runner for 2nd-ranked Stanford, helping them to a 37 - 65 win over 3rd-ranked Oregon.

NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional
Villanova's Sarah-Vance Goodman, formerly of TC Roberson HS, followed teammate and defending NCAA champion Carrie Tollefson to a 1-2 finish (17:15.6 and 17:19.4) at Navy. The 2nd-ranked Wildcats placed six in the top eight as they prepare for a serious run against top-ranked and defending champion BYU at the Nationals in Lawrence, Kansas on Monday, November 23.

WOMEN
Congratulations to former Roxboro Person High runner Mary Jayne Harrelson, now at Appalachian State. Harrelson qualified for NCAA nationals as one of four individuals from the Southeast Regional at Furman University. She finished fourth overall in 17:32 for the 5K course ahead of the next two individual qualifiers.
N.C. State cruised to the women's title, 47-73 over Wake Forest as both teams received automatic qualifiers to NCAA's. Former Wilkes Central star, Erin Musson, finished fifth for the Wolfpack and 18th overall as the sophomore ran 17:57. Former Raleigh Broughton star Meredith Faircloth (1995 4A 1600 and 3200 meter state champion) finished sixth for the Wolfpack and 41st overall, as the senior ran 18:24. Other former N.C. high school girl runners finishing in the top 50: Western Carolina junior Jenny Warfford (Jordan-Matthews) in 23rd (18:03); UNC-Asheville freshman Mandy Becker (Fuquay-Varina, 1994 3A state champion) in 26th (18:05); and Virginia junior Frances Warner (Fayetteville Smith, 1993 4A state champion) in 47th (18:32).

MEN
The N.C. State men finished second behind James Madison, 50-73 as both teams received the Southeast Regional's two automatic qualifiers to NCAA nationals.
The Wolfpack were led by 4 former N.C. high school runners: East Forsyth's Chris Pluchos (the senior ran second for the team and finished 15th overall in 30:43 for the 10K course); Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons' David Patterson (the freshman ran 3rd for the team and finished 19th in 30:49); Apex's Robbie Howell (the senior ran 6th for the team and finished 34th overall in 31:16) and North Henderson's Aaron Keller (the freshman ran 7th for the team and finished 38th overall in 31:23). Other former N.C. high school runners in the top 50: Rocky Mount's Nick Winkel, a sophomore at UNC, was first for the Tar Heels and finished 32nd overall in 31:11.

November 2, 1998
Three former NC high school stars helped NC State to their 4th straight title in the 1998 ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va. Chris Pluchos, who ran at East Forsyth, freshman David Patterson who ran for Raleigh's Cardinal Gibbons, and Apex's Robbie Howell ran 3-4-5 for the Wolfpack. They finished 5th, 7th and 10th respectively as State had 7 of the top 14. Another former NC star, Nick Winkel (Rocky Mount) placed 9th, leading UNC to a 5th place finish.

Erin Musson, 1995 state 3A cross-country champion from Wilkes Central, ran no. 5 for NC State, with an 11th place finish (17:57.0) at the women's ACC Cross-Country Championships. NC State won the team title with 32 points. They are ranked 7th nationally.

November 1, 1998
Former Thomasville star Jon Weldon ran no. 5 for top-ranked Stanford, helping them to a narrow two-point win (48-50) over 3rd-ranked Oregon in the Pac-10 Championship in Eugene, Oregon. Weldon placed 21st in 24:30 for the 8K course in cool and rainy conditions. It was the 3rd consecutive conference title for Stanford, the defending NCAA champions.

October 31, 1998
1997 4A cross country champion, Julie Wilhelm who ran at Wilmington Hoggard, made the Big South all-conference team with a seventh place finish at the conference championships at Radford University in Virginia. UNCA women's team finished first over two-time defending champion Coastal Carolina. Wilhelm was chosen "Rookie of the Year" in the conference.

October 31, 1998
Mary Jayne Harrelson, formerly of Roxboro Person HS, won the 1998 Southern Conference Championship, setting a course record at Davidson, NC. In two years at Appalachian she has set Southern Conference Records in the 800 and 1500, and made All-American at 800m (5th in 1997 NCAA Championships at Buffalo in 2:04.63). She also ran 4:22.87 to qualify for Nationals in the 1500. This XC season she has also won the NC Intercollegiate XC championships in 17:19, again setting a course record. Harrelson placed third at the 1996 4A State HS outdoor meet in the 800m (2:18). She did not run cross-country in high school.

October 31, 1998
UNC Charlotte's John Skotcher, who ran at Winston-Salem Glenn HS, placed 9th in the Conference USA Championship to help his team to a 2nd place finish. Skotcher was UNC Charlotte's no. 3 man as he ran 25:21 for the 8K course in Memphis, TN.

October 30, 1998
Former T.C. Roberson star Sarah-Vance Goodman was Villanova's no.2 runner in the Big East Championships in Boston, helping to lead her team to the conference title. She placed 6th, with a time of 17:09. Her teammate and defending NCAA champion Carrie Tollefson led tenth-ranked Villanova, placing 4th in 16:59.

October 24, 1998
Three former East Rutherford High School runners led Mars Hill to the South Atlantic Conference mens' cross country championship at Wingate. Brock Bailey (Senior) finished 1st with a course record time. Chris Bradley (Junior) finished 2nd. Clayton Toney (Freshman) finished 4th. Clayton was 4th in the 1997 state 3A cross-country meet

In Other News:
Former Charlotte Providence star Justin Niedzalek ran no.2 for Princeton, helping his team to the IC4A-ECAC Championship in New York City. He placed 10th in 24:53 for the 8K (5.0 mi) course in Van Cortland Park.
