Jackonville's Dave Dunaway ran a 10.0 100-yard dash to break a 37-year-old record. The old record of 10.1 was held by seven sprinters, including Dunaway. Dunaway also set a new record in the 220 of 21.5, shaving a tenth off the old record, established by Myers Park's Bill Houston in 1958 and tied by Dunaway in 1962. Dunaway set yet another record in the High Jump of 6-2. The old record was 6-1 1/4 by Tom Clark of Greensboro in 1960. Dunaway also placed third in the Long Jump.

Hendersonville junior Carroll Maxwell ran the 440 in 50.0 to take a tenth off the old record, set in 1956 by Myers Park's Bobby Powell.

Charlotte Myers Park set a new record of 3:28.0 in the Mile Relay. The old record, 3:29.4 was set by Myers Park in 1957.

Myers Park junior Flake Campbell broke the Discus record by over four feet with a throw of 157-7. The old record, 153-3 was set by Grimsley's Bob Jamieson Jr. in 1960. Campbell went on to improve the record to 163-3 in 1964.

Dave Dunaway and Shot Put winner Bob Matheson both went on to successful football careers at Duke. Dunaway was the 41st player chosen in the 1967 NFL draft (Green Bay Packers) and played for the New York Giants during his two-year NFL career. Matheson, a First Team-All American, was the 18th player picked that year (Clevelend Browns) and played 13 seasons as an NFL linebacker, the last 9 with the Miami Dolphins. Matheson played for the Super Bowl Champion Dolphins in their historic 1972 unbeaten and untied (17-0) season.
