Charlotte Independence junior Steve Grathwohl narrowly edged Jimmy Howell (Durham Hillside) by two-tenths of a second.
This was the 2nd year in a row that Howell finished 2nd. Charlotte Myers Park won for the 3rd consecutive year.

44th was sophomore Joe Browder (Greensboro Grimsley). 48th was sophomore Ric Shriver (Winston-Salem RJ Reynolds).
Browder went on to become NCHSAA Champion (All-Classification) in the Mile (4:18.6) in 1971. Shriver went on to win
the NCHSAA 2-Mile (9:27.0) in 1971.

The State Cross Country Meet included all classifications in 1968.

Cross Country was not recognized by the NCHSAA as a girls sport until 1980.
