Dudley Sectional ChampBy Bob Kirley, Staff ReporterGREENSBORO -- Greensboro Dudley won the final event -- the mile relay -- and broke a tie with city foe Grimsley to capture the team championship in a sectional track meet yesterday at Jamieson Stadium. Dudley and Grimsley each won six events in a meet that had entrants from over 40 area schools, but the Whirlies managed only a third-place finish in the final relay. Meet records were set in three events and another mark was tied. Defending state champion Andrew Golden of High Point Central won the long jump with a record of 23-8 3/4, outstripping West's Jimmy Samuels (22-8 1/2). Grimsley's Garcia Chavis edged Parkland's Curtis Peterson in the 110 meter high hurdles at 14.30. Peterson had set that record in yesterday's qualifying. Grimsley's Dan Morton handled the two-mile field in a record time of 9:37.92, and Dudley's Braxton Williams tied the 100-yard dash mark at 9.83 seconds, narrowly clipping West's Samuels. The husky Williams also won the 200 meter dash. Reynolds' John Hoots led from start to finish and won the mile at 4:26.76. The top four finishers in each event will advance to Friday's state regional meet at Hendersonville. The state meet will be held the following week at Cary. |
