A national high school mile record was the highlight of the 1977 state meets. Julie Shea ran 4:43.1 at the girls state meet in Raeford, and also won the 880 in 2:16.6.

Richmond County's boys, led by 100/220 winner Derius Covington and coached by Charlie Bishop, set new state meet records in the 880-yard and Mile Relays on their way to a state team championship.

NCPrepTrack has received an email that the boys meet (like the 1978 meet) was held at Cary High School (and not at the traditional location of NC State. Can anyone confirm this? (Email info for NCPrepTrack.com)
