1976 saw two especially outstanding athletes set new state meet records. Julie Shea, a junior at Cardinal Gibbons took 26 seconds off of the Mile record with a 4:50.8. (Shea set a National Record in this meet in 1977.) Later, running for N.C. State, Shea earned 11 All American Cross Country and Track titles and won 8 national championships. She won the 5000 at the 1980 Olympic Trials.
Kathy McMillian (Hoke County) longed jumped 21-7 to better the record of 20-2.5 she had set her junior year. Previously, as a freshman and sophomore she had set meet records of 17-7 and 18-0. McMillian, who was to compete later in 1976 in the Montreal Olympics, also won the 100-yard dash (11.1) and the 220 (24.4).
Hoke County's girls won their fifth state team championship in a row. This was the fifth year that a state meet for girls was held.
All NCHSAA classifications competed together in Track and Field in 1976.
