Chapel Hill, Garner's Wallace Win Cross Country Run

By Tony Britt, Herald Correspondent

Five Chapel Hill runners finished in the top 10, leading the Tigers to their second straight N.C. High School Athletic Association cross-country sectionals title Friday at Duke Golf Course.

Chapel Hill's 32 team points gave the Tigers a decisive edge over favored Jordan, which had 78 points. Hillside finished sixth and Northern seventh in the 27-team field.

The top two teams and the top three individuals on teams that failed to qualify advance to the state meet Friday in Buies Creek.

"It was definitely a total team effort," said Chapel Hill coach Gary Andrews. "Our top five guys finished only 38 seconds apart. When we run in a pack like we did today, nothing else could've worked out better."

Ricky Wallace of Garner won the individual title with a time of 13 minutes, nine seconds over the 2.6 mile course that was shortened from three miles earlier in the day. Hillside's Greg Roseboro, who won the Durham City-County meet in September, finished second barely ahead of Chapel Hill's Leon Yates with a 13:11 clocking.

"We kept trading positions for the first two miles," said Wallace, a junior who finished 10th in the state meet in 1978. "Then I started pulling away. When I hit the final decline, I just glided in."

Jordan's Jeff Wilkins was fourth at 13:13, sandwiched in between Yates' 13:12 and Herion's 13:14 times.

Behind Herion came Brad Michelsen of Jordan, the Triangle 3-A conference's co-player of the year with Wilkins, followed by Gene Tarascio, David Neish and Tirso Navarro, all of Chapel Hill.

"I looked back in the (finish line) chute," Wilkins said, "and saw all those Chapel Hill guys, I thought, 'Oh no!'"

The Falcons compiled a perfect 15-0 record during the regular season and were considered slight favorites over the 5-0 Chapel Hill squad. But with the Tigers' team effort and some misfortune by Jordan, it was all Chapel Hill at the end.

"We had two mess-ups during the race," said Jordan coach John Gray, "Michelsen made a wrong turn and had to backtrack and Homer (White, Jordan's fourth finisher) fell. That could've made a difference in a lot of points."

"When I was going through one of the cuts," explained Michelsen, "the official called me back -- saying I'd cut the turn too short -- while the others kept running."

In addition, the Falcons' No. 4 runner, Joe Simeonsson, was sick all week and finished 35th of 191 competitors.

"I'm not crying about it, but I felt we were under par today," said Gray. "But everybody faces it all the time. Chapel Hill ran all over us and everybody else today. I hope to give them a better race next week."

"We knew they (Jordan) were good," said Andrews, "but we knew we were good, too. We think we'll do real well in the state meet. We finished second last year and have a stronger team this year."
