I recall seeing a digital wristwatch for the first time in 1977. (A really hot item at
the time!) Back during my high school days in the 1960s, we had inferior training and racing
shoes by today's standards,
no wind gauges at track meets, nor FAT timing. NC had only three all-weather tracks ...and
they were 440-yards instead of 400-meters. And one indoor track ...176 yards. And no Internet.
I owned a stopwatch, similar to my coach's watches, not digital, that had a 30-second sweep hand capable of recording one time -- to 1/10 of a second. Useful for intervals and speedwork.
We ran our distance workouts using wristwatches with hour, minute, and 60-second sweep hands. I recall waiting for that sweep second hand to reach "12" before our distance group began running 9.0 and 10.0 mile courses from Reynolds HS that either Coach or I had measured, using a car's odometer. (No start/stop buttons on that wristwatch. We had to remember the exact time-of-day that we took off!)
I had a grandfather, born in 1891, who never wore a wristwatch. He was "old school". ...Always wore a pocket watch.
I love following the progress of technology. Here's the latest in technology that high school cross country runners are now using here in 2017:
