Matt DeBole's wife has been named Head Women's Cross Country Coach at Stanford University.

DeBole Named Women's XC Coach - GoStanford.com

Elizabeth DeBole profile - GoStanford.com

Many of us recall Matt's days running for Winston-Salem Mount Tabor, where he had high school bests of 1:52.4, 4:08.28, and 8:50.16 (currently #2 NC All-Time). He also ran a 1:50 anchor leg on Tabor's Sprint Medley (3:22.76) which ranks #2 NC All-Time behind New Bern's National High School Record.

As a freshman he ran on their 4x800 that won at the 2000 State Indoor Meet (All-Classification), won the 1000 his sophomore, junior, and senior years, and also took the 1600 his junior year. DeBole had indoor bests of 1:56.93, 2:31.55, and 4:11.47. He won the High School Mile (4:16.50) at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden as a senior.

Outdoors he won NCHSAA 4A titles in the 1600 (4:13.75) and 800 (1:56.13) as a junior and the 1600 (4:09.64) as a senior.

Matt was NCHSAA 4A Cross Country Champion his junior and senior years (2001 & 2002) and and placed 2nd both of those years at the Foot Locker Regional   (14:49.2 & 14:55.5). At the Foot Locker Nationals he was 16th in 2001 and 5th in 2002 -- the highest placing ever at the Foot Locker Nats by a NC male.  [Trivia: Another Winston-Salem runner was 11th in that race ...Bobby Mack (North Forsyth).   ...and the last place finisher? A junior named Galen Rupp.]

Congrats to Matt and his wife on her new position at Stanford.

Trentavis Friday (Cherryville HS 2014) is the only NC male athlete included -- which may be arguably correct.

Why was Bob Mathias not in the above list?? (Olympic Decathlon Champion as a 17 year old. ?!).

I also thought the list was a little too loaded with distance runners. But why was Gerry Lindgren left off? (8:40.0i 2-Mile, 13:44.0 5000, 29:17.6 10,000 National High School Records).  Check out Lindgren on this page.
