Track & Field News' compilation of High School All-Americans (1974-2013) continues to expand with the boys 4x100 and 4x200 now included.
One North Carolina school has had an All-American 4x100 team, and four have earned the honor in the the 4x200. Texas, Florida, and Louisiana are the only states that have had more All-American teams in the 4x200.
Many states do not contest the 4x200 as a standard event. The 4x200 (or its predecessor, the 4x220-yard Relay) has been a regular NCHSAA State Championship event since 1963. Actually, the NCHSAC began running the 4x220 in 1960 ...with Durham Hillside winning the first title.

One of the more talented North Carolina high school runners is Alana Hadley, who is about to begin her Senior year at Charlotte's Ardrey Kell HS. Hadley
was a Foot Locker National Cross Country qualifer as a freshman, and has run 17:05.16 (5K) and 34:59.38 (10K) in track meets. She is the 2nd-fastest NC girl ever - 17:16.7 - over the McAlpine course in Charlotte. Hadley skipped cross country and track her Junior year to focus on the marathon - an event in which she has a
best of 2 hours, 41 minutes and 55 seconds.
Hadley has written a blog to talk to young female runners in a very straight forward way about 4 topics that can often be touchy and controversial: nutrition, supplements, menstrual cycles and mileage. She has done this out of a deep desire to help others through her experiences and understanding. She sincerely hopes that many young runners (especially females) will find at least some of what she writes to be helpful to them.

Anyone else enjoy "Track & Field News Hieroglyphics" like I do?
The latest issue of eTN (Vol. 13, No. 43) from Track & Field News has results of last weekend's USATF National Junior Championships ...with this interesting line in the 200-meter results:
200(2.9):1. Trentavis Friday (GJTC) 20.03w (a-c HSL) (a-c: 1,1 HS; 4, =5 WJ; 3,3 AJ);
Translated, that means [I think] that
1) his 20.03 was wind-assisted (+2.9 meters-per-second),
2) is the National High School Leader for 2014 under all-conditions;
3) makes Friday #1 on the All-Time High School Performer list for the 200 in all-conditions;
4) It was the #1 High School 200 performance All-Time under all-conditions;
5) Friday is now #4 performer on the All-Time World Junior (under-20) List (all-conditions);
6) The performance is tied for #5 on the All-Time World Junior List (all-conditions);
7) Friday becomes the #3 performer on the All-Time American Junior List (all-conditions);
8) His 20.03w is the 3rd-best ever on the All-Time US Junior
Performances list (all-condtions).
His line in the 100m results was a bit simpler:
Heats: I(1.6)-1. Friday 10.00 HSR (old HSR 10.01 Demps [FlHS] '08) (2, 2 WJ, AJ;)

News relating to Charlotte's McAlpine Park:
The City's contractor is starting sewer pipe installation today under Upper McAlpine Creek Greenway near Sardis Road. The greenway will be closed between Sardis Road and Monroe Road, although some areas may be accessible until crews begin digging. Construction vehicles may access greenway site from Sardis Road and Monroe Road. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation (MCPR) and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department (CMUD) are working closely to reduce the impact of the sewer project on adjacent public facilities such as Boyce Park and McAlpine Creek Park, especially the fall 5K race season. The 5K trail events in McAlpine Creek Park will not be interrupted between August 1 and December 15 of any year.

Track fans and stat nuts will enjoy Jack Shepard's High School Track 2014.
The 5.5 x 8.5-inch 68-page booklet can be obtained by simply writing a check for $12.00 and mailing it to:
Jack Shepard, 14551 Southfield Drive, Westminster, CA 92683.
This, the 56th edition, has been produced annually for many years by Shepard, currently the Men's High School Editor for Track & Field News.
Besides results of major national high school meets last year there are lists (boys & girls') for 2013 (Top 50), All-Time, National HS Records, Class Records, and Age Records (14-18) ...for nearly all events, including the Medley Relays, Steeplechase, Hammer and Heptathlon. And that's just Outdoors. There are separate lists for Indoors.
The covergirl is currently a senior who last year ran 1:59.51, 4:04.62 (1500), 9:38.68i (2-Mile), and 15:45.56 in 2013. Did you know that two NC girls still have the All-Time bests in the Long Jump and 10,000? ...from the 1970s? Three NC boys are in the Top 11 All-Time in the Triple Jump? Two NC schools are in the Top 7 All-Time in the boys Sprint Medley? Two NC schools were in the Top 6 last year in the girls 4x200? Three NC guys were in the Top 6 in the 500 last year? ..and five in the Top 18? The sophomore record for the indoor SP is held by a Charlotte girl? The 22nd-best All-Time in the boys 800 was run in 1963? And the 13th-best All-Time Decathlon performance was set in 1953?
...Just some of the interesting nuggets one can dig up from this handy book.
