Moore's Atkins track team was 3rd in the 1968 NCHSAA State Meet (all-classification). Atkins'
Alfred Adams
won the 120-yard High Hurdles and Olin Carter won the 180-yard Low Hurdles with Adams taking 2nd. Willie Crosby took 3rd in the Long Jump (22-0.25). Atkins' 4x220-yard relay was 4th and their 4x440-yard relay was 6th.
Atkins tied for 2nd in the 1969 State Meet. At that meet Atkins' 4x440-yard relay team of Willis Miller, James Caldwell, Alfred Adams, and Sylvester Johnson set a new state meet record of 3:22.9 (not bad on an old clay track). Adams won the 180-yard Low Hurdles and narrowly lost the 120-yard High Hurdles to Wilson Fike's
Carlester Crumpler. Atkins was 3rd in the 4x220, Bracey Bonham 3rd in the Discus, and Ralph Taylor 6th in the Mile (4:28.5).
In 1970 (the first year the state meet was run on an all-weather track) Atkins was 2nd in the 4x440 (3:23.0) and 4th in the 4x220. The 1971 Atkins team was 5th at the State Meet,
winning both relays -- the 4x220 in 1:28.8 (Jimmy Caldwell, Carl Moore, Willis Miller, Robert Redd) and the 4x440 in a new state meet record of 3:19.0. Running on the record-setting team were Jimmy Caldwell, Carl Moore, Robert Redd, and Willis Miller.
Moore's Atkins teams won the Forsyth County Championship three years in a row (1969-1970-1971).
He coached at West Forsyth High School from 1971-1973, after Atkins was changed from a high school to a middle school. After leaving West Forsyth in 1973, Moore coached basketball at
several colleges and returned to high school coaching in 1988. He was at Charlotte Harding HS from 1988-1991 and then at Asheville High School from 1991-2003.

Due to the construction at McAlpine Park this summer (photos) the 5K cross country course lost about 13 meters on the turn near Independence Blvd. and a few other meters here and there. Charlotte coaches made a course adjustment this past week in the horseshoe area at the 2.0 km mark to make up distance that had been lost. Last Saturday's Hare & Hounds Invitational at McAlpine was run

The construction company was not able to begin work today until almost noon due to the high number of teams practicing in the park. To ensure that the work is complete prior to the start of the season we are forced to close the facility again. Once the work is complete I will send another email notifying you that the park is open. Our first priority has to be completing the work and this attempt at compromising did not work.
Parking at Boyce is very limited and will not be able to accommodate a large number of teams. There are natural trails at Colonel Francis Beatty Park and Reedy Creek Park that can be used. Practice may have to be held on campus until the work is completed and we can open McAlpine. Thank you, - - - - -

Mecklenburg County Park and Rec realizes that this is a very busy time of year as teams are beginning to practice for the upcoming season. The construction company is still completing some work at McAlpine, but to help alleviate some of the parking issues at other facilities, we have worked with them so that you can now park at McAlpine to access the trail. We would like to focus all the traffic to the first two banks of parking, closest to the kiosks and water fountain. Please be mindful that they will be working, especially on the straightaway from the start line to Independence Blvd. If you are out there with your team, and you see them working, please move to another portion of the trail. If they are not able to complete their work due to pedestrian traffic, we will have to close the parking lot again.
Let me know if you have any questions and we are excited for another great cross country season at McAlpine! Thank you,

Beatty recalls competing his junior year (1952) in a major high school meet --
The Duke-Durham Relays -- where he finished a close 2nd to Boyd Newman with
both breaking the meet record of 4:41. A few weeks later at the NCHSAA State meet
Beatty beat Newman, the defending champion from High Point in 4:40.5.
Beatty also mentions the Queen City Relays, his first indoor race (on UNC's
11-laps-to-the-mile banked wooden track), and training with John West, who
attended all-black Second Ward HS and was the NCHSAC's top
miler. He also tells about how he almost went to Notre Dame instead of UNC.
Cohen (who ran at Appalachian State) always does great interviews and this is a
fascinating one with the first person to run a sub-4:00 mile indoors.
