From NationalScholastic.org:   2018 Cedric Walker Development Grant deadline extended to Sept. 30

Since the inception of the NSAF's Development Grants in 2010, these have helped track and field teams and clubs defray expenses, purchase equipment, and uniforms, enable coaches education, and much more. Average grants of $700 are awarded and may be used for any reasonable purpose pertaining to the recipient's track and field program. As an additional dimension to the program, each recipient must also participate in a volunteer service program in their community. The NSAF typically disperses 12-18 of these grants each year.

Those of you who are fans and/or subscribers to Track & Field News already know this, but the magazine will be free online until May 3, when most of the magazine will be hidden behind a paywall, for subscribers only.

This is part of TFN's transition from a printed paper monthly magazine to an all-digital format. That was a sad step, but necessary for the survival of the magazine.

Track & Field News was a printed paper product from February 1948 to December 2017. I began subscribing in 1966, and although I've given away many back issues or tossed them in the recycling bin, I still have several boxes of old issues.

Back in the mid-1970s while I was in grad school at Oregon, Track & Field News had an opening for a staff writer, which I applied for. I didn't get the position, but enjoyed a nice flight to San Francisco and a day meeting with T&FN's small staff in their Los Altos and Mountain View offices at the time.

Track & Field News' current issue is available at this link:

https://trackandfieldnews.com/current-issue/

The magazine has had a website with some free material for over 20 years now, and much of that will remain available at no cost:

Irwin Belk was a wealthy fellow from Charlotte who was behind providing nice track and field facilities at 29 schools and colleges. I learned today that he recently passed away. Here's an interesting 2/28 article on Belk from the business section of The Charlotte Observer as well as an obituary which has a nice quote at the end:

Recalling the 1960s, when I first became a fan of track & field and started getting monthly issues of Track & Field News, I remember the 600-yard Run as being a hugely popular event on the indoor circuit.

The "indoor circuit"? It was a series of annual indoor meets held throughout January and February in San Francisco (The Cow Palace), New York (Madison Square Garden), Detroit (Cobo Hall), Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland, Toronto, Kansas City, Albuquerque, etc.

Many of these meets were run on wood, 10-lap-to-the-Mile (176 yard) banked tracks.

And the 600-yard event was very popular.

Former North Mecklenburg HS runner Vincent Crisp is now the Collegiate Indoor Record Holder for the event:
