Greensboro Dudley's girls, led by sprinter Marlene Poole, defended their
4-A title with a huge 24-point victory.

Smithfield-Selma's Dashontia Atkinson won both the shot and discus, setting
a new state meet discus record (all classifications) with a throw of 141-4. The old
record was 133-5, by Wanda Haythe (Oxford Webb) in 1983.

The girls long jump champion was determined by just 1/4 of an inch.
